They were last year's revelation and it is so incredible how far they've gone in only 3. This band from L.A was formed just three years ago and it is integrated by Mark Foster (vocals and practically every instrument), Mark Pontius (drums and percussion) and Cubbie Fink (bass). It is quite difficult to label them in a particular music genre, I actually think they could fit in the indie-rock genre but being very alternative.
The band's story is not the typical 3 friends from high school forming a band and playing for so many years, these guys met in L.A while they were working at no so glamorous jobs such as music writers for advertisements, but then Mark Foster recruited them to form a band after realizing that he was no longer a solo artist.. None of them wanted to be apart from music, especially their leader, Mark Foster, who found music very helpful through his battle against drugs. I remember reading an interview where he said that his family encourage him to try with music, as he wasn't interested in going to college or having any kind of boring job. That's how "Foster and the People" began, they started to play in tiny small venues and people began to talk about them and comment their music, when the band realized that they were about to take off, they renamed the band deleting the "and" and so on being "Foster the People".
As I said, their first shows were crucial to be known, there was a particular song that attracted everybody and actually, that song, would take them to where they are right now. This song is called "Pumped up Kicks"(not my favorite at all) , which received significant airplay on the famous "KROQ". That is how the band got known in the main source of music of the world nowadays: the internet. From that moment on, everything got way easier, the band performed at famous "Coachella" and announced that their upcoming album "Torches" was about to be released, and so that happened, May was the month selected for their first studio album to see the light.
Pumped up Kicks:
I particularly think that this band makes the difference because of their very unique sound. Is not only guitars and drums and high bass lines as normally in indie rock. There are also lots of synthesizers, pianos, and electronic sounds that together sound incredible. And, of course, there is Mark Foster's voice which is amazing, very high and soft (first time i heard it i did not know if it was a guy or a girl) but not in the bad way, it is a very special voice and it sounds better live than in the album (which is very difficult).
Helena Beat:
In the album we find different tunes, it kicks off with "Helena Beat", very electro-rock and shaky, like "Pumped up kicks" or "Call it what you want" and also "Hustling". Then there are other songs, very relaxed, like "Waste".
Waste:
There is also the rock side of the album (don't expect pure rock, i mean indie rock) with songs like "Don't stop (color on the walls)" which is great, it's a song about the opinion of a 5 year old kid about the world; also "Houdini" my favorite. And so on there are also songs like "Miss You", "Warrant" and "I would do anything for you" which are very Foster.
this video makes no sense at all,
Call it what you want:
All in all, the album is pure music and Mark's songwriting is genuine and pure music, for those who haven't heard the band, i really recommend it, especially their acoustic sessions.
here you can see how good they are acoustic:
